I've been working with crystals and gemstones for years. I've held thousands of stones, sourced from gem shows and suppliers, and made more necklaces than I can count. A question that comes up is some version of the same thing: how do I know which one is right for me?
The honest answer is that it's more intuitive than most people think. But there's a framework that helps, and once you understand it, choosing a gemstone necklace stops feeling overwhelming and starts feeling like coming home to something you already know.
Start with how you want to feel
This is the step most people skip. They go straight to looking, scrolling through options, trying to decide based on color, price, or what catches their eye. And sometimes that works. But the pieces that end up meaning something, the ones you reach for every morning without thinking, almost always start with a feeling.
So before you look at anything, ask yourself: how do I want to feel when I put this on?
Grounded. Energized. Calm. Seen. Protected. Soft. Transformed. Loved. Open.
There's no wrong answer, and you probably already know. That feeling is your starting point, and it's more useful than any other filter you could apply.
Let the stone point the way
Once you know the feeling you're after, the stone almost chooses itself. Gemstones have been associated with specific energies and intentions across cultures for centuries, and while the science is personal rather than clinical, the resonance is real. Here's a guide to some of the stones I work with most and the feelings they're most commonly associated with.

Moonstone for intuition, new beginnings, and emotional openness. It's the stone for someone standing at a threshold, a new chapter, a shift in how she sees herself. The Snow is a delicate chain necklace centered on the rainbow moonstone's luminous blue flash.
Labradorite for transformation, protection, and trusting your instincts. It's the stone for the woman who moves through the world with awareness and doesn't need external validation to know she's on the right path. The Prism and Liora both feature labradorite in different expressions.
Rhodonite for compassion, emotional healing, and leading with the heart. If you've been through something and came out with more love rather than less, rhodonite tends to find you. The Rosera and Noirrose both carry this energy.

Smoky quartz for grounding, transmuting negative energy, and mental clarity. It's one of the premier stones for people who live in their heads. Not a shield, more like a filter. Mira, Umbra, and Leoven are built around smoky quartz's deep, translucent presence.
Citrine for joy, abundance, and optimism. It's one of the warmest stones to wear, and there's a reason it shows up in jewelry across so many cultures and time periods. The Dawn pairs citrine with freshwater pearl for warmth alongside quiet elegance.
Pearl for wisdom, nurturing, and quiet strength. The pearl has been worn by women across cultures for thousands of years, and it carries a timelessness that few stones match. The Aveline and Nacrine both feature freshwater pearls.

Amethyst for calm, clarity, and spiritual grounding. It's one of the most accessible and beloved stones for a reason. The Isolde is a silk-knotted amethyst necklace with a removable pendant, one of the most artisanal pieces in the collection.
Amazonite for balance, communication, and emotional clarity. It has a distinctive blue-green color that feels both calming and alive. The Amara and Azurea Maren both pair amazonite with freshwater pearl for a look that feels modern and intentional.
Moss agate for grounding, patience, and a sense of connection to the natural world. It's a stone with a quiet, almost meditative quality, and the inclusions inside each bead make every piece genuinely one of a kind. The Trail features moss agate alongside a quartz pendant for a piece inspired by open landscape and moving water.

Jade for harmony, prosperity, and connection to the natural world. There are wide varieties of jade, and each carries its own character. The Everra features nephrite jade, one of the most historically significant forms of the stone.
Garnet for passion, vitality, and groundedness. It's a stone with more depth than its deep red color suggests. The Garnelle pairs marquise garnet with freshwater pearls for a necklace that wears with real presence.
I expand the collection seasonally as I find the right materials, so if you're drawn to a stone you don't see here, new arrivals are worth checking back on.
Let the visual confirm it
Once you've identified the feeling and the stone that carries it, let the piece's visual qualities confirm the choice.
Does the color feel right against your skin? Warm-toned skin tends to glow alongside amber, gold, coral, and earthy stones. Cool-toned skin often sings with blues, purples, and silver-adjacent stones. But this is a guideline, not a rule. If a stone draws you in despite the conventional wisdom, trust that.
Does the scale feel like you? A delicate beaded necklace and a bold statement piece both have their place, but one will feel more like you than the other. Think about what you actually reach for when you get dressed, not what you aspire to wear.
Does the length work for how you dress? A 16-inch necklace sits at the collarbone and works beautifully with crew necks and higher necklines. An 18-inch necklace is the most versatile length and works with almost everything. A 20-inch or longer necklace layers well and has more presence. If you're not sure, 18 inches is almost always the right starting point.
Does the style feel wearable for your actual life? The most beautiful piece in the world won't serve you if it lives in a box. Choose something you can imagine putting on on an ordinary Tuesday, not just for a special occasion.
Trust yourself
The right gemstone necklace is the one you reach for, not the one you save or the one that sits in a velvet pouch waiting for the right moment that never quite arrives.
The pieces I make at Auréad Designs are designed to be worn, not preserved. Every stone is chosen because it stopped me, or because something about its color, texture, or energy felt right. That same instinct is available to you.
Start with the feeling. Let the stone confirm it. Let the visual settle it. Then wear it, on any old Tuesday, with whatever you happen to be wearing, and see how it feels.
That's how you know.
